Wine, History, and the Douro Valley: Our 2028 Portugal and Spain River Cruise

I have a theory about the perfect trip. It isn't the one with the most activities or the longest list of famous landmarks. It is the one where the days just feel right, from the first cup of coffee on deck to the last glass of wine at dinner.

I think the Douro Valley is that trip.

Denise Karnes and I are hosting a 7-night river cruise through Portugal to the Spanish border, October 21 - 28, 2028, aboard AmaWaterways' AmaGaia. We start in Porto and sail east into wine country, past terraced vineyards, small river towns and quintas (wine estates) where Port has been made on the same hillsides for centuries.

If you love wine, food and history, this is the trip I would plan for you from scratch. I don't have to, because AmaWaterways already does it very well.

Why the Douro

The Douro River winding through vineyard-covered hillsides in Portugal

The Douro is one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world. Its boundaries were set in 1756, before the American Revolution and before most of the wine regions we know today existed. The terraces you see from the ship were cut into steep hillsides by hand, one generation after another, and that work is why the valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is also still quiet. This isn't a place with tour buses lined up outside the tasting rooms. Many quintas are still family estates, and the person pouring your wine might be the person who grew the grapes.

Our Ship: The AmaGaia

The AmaGaia sails only on the Douro. She carries just 102 guests in 51 staterooms, so it feels more like a small hotel than a cruise ship. Staterooms start at 161 square feet and the suites are 323 square feet. Many of them have a balcony, so you can watch the vineyards go by from your own room.

All meals on board are included, with wine, beer and soft drinks at lunch and dinner and a Sip & Sail cocktail hour before dinner. There is a pool on the Sun Deck, a fitness room, and Wi-Fi throughout the ship.

The Itinerary: October 21 - 28, 2028

We board in Porto and sail upriver to Vega de Terrón, on the Spanish border.

Day 1 - Porto, Embarkation. Board the AmaGaia in the afternoon and settle into your stateroom. That evening the ship takes us out on the Porto Illuminations cruise, under the bridges with the city lit up on both banks.

Day 2 - Porto. Choose the "City of Bridges" tour, with Porto Cathedral, São Bento Station, Bolhão Market and a cable car ride above Vila Nova de Gaia, or a more active Porto hike. In the afternoon we visit a Port wine cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia for a tour and tasting.

Day 3 - Entre-os-Rios. We cruise into wine country and sit down to a traditional Portuguese lunch at a local quinta, served family style at long tables.

Day 4 - Régua. An excursion to Mateus Palace and its gardens. Yes, that Mateus, the one on the rosé bottle.

Day 5 - Régua and Pinhão. In Lamego you can take the town tour or climb the Holy Staircase, 686 tiled steps up to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies. Either way you finish with bôlas de Lamego, Portuguese sparkling wine and local sausages. Then we sail on to Pinhão.

Day 6 - Pinhão. A morning walk to the Pinhão train station, where 25 blue tile panels show life on the Douro. Then lunch and a Port tasting at a quinta.

Day 7 - Barca d'Alva. We cruise to Barca d'Alva and visit Castelo Rodrigo, a hilltop village called the White Village for its almond trees, with views into Spain. Take the tour or the hike, then taste the local almonds, bread, cheese and wine.

Day 8 - Vega de Terrón, Disembarkation. We say goodbye to the ship on the Spanish border.

The itinerary is subject to change by AmaWaterways.

Before and After the Cruise

The cruise ends in Vega de Terrón, which is a small river port and not a city, so everyone needs a transfer from there. The easy way is the optional 3-night Madrid package after the cruise, which includes the transfer from the ship. Before the cruise you can add 3 nights in Lisbon or 2 nights in Porto.

Whichever you choose, we will help you plan your flights and your trip home.

How Active Is It?

Porto and the hill towns have steep streets and plenty of steps. Most stops give you a choice between a guided tour and a more active hike, so you can pick your pace each day. If you have questions about a specific stop, ask us and we will tell you plainly what to expect.

The Tiles

One thing that surprises people about Portugal is the azulejo tiles. They are on churches, train stations, houses and palaces, hand-painted in blue and white, and they tell the story of the country's history and daily life. The Pinhão train station on our itinerary is one of the most photographed examples.

The Food

Portugal doesn't get enough credit for its food. There are grilled sardines, bacalhau (salt cod, cooked more ways than you can count) and the pastéis de nata custard tarts you will want every morning. On a river cruise you get dinner on board and the local specialties in port, like the bôlas in Lamego and the almonds and cheese in Castelo Rodrigo.

Wine Country Without the Work

A river cruise gets you deep into wine country without the logistics. There is no rental car, no narrow hillside roads, no working out which quintas take visitors, and nobody has to drive after a tasting.

You wake up, look out the window, have breakfast and step off the ship with a local guide. Then you walk back to a hotel that moves to the next town while you have lunch.

Two Hosts on Board

Denise and I will both be on the ship for the whole trip. With two of us, there is always someone around to answer a question, help you choose between the tour and the hike, or point you to the best spot on deck at sunset.

Save $500 Per Person Through October 31, 2026

There are two savings on this sailing:

  • $250 per person group discount. This one stays in place whenever you book.
  • $250 per person Early Booking Reward from AmaWaterways, when you book and pay your deposit by October 31, 2026.

With both, fares start at $4,689 per person, based on two people sharing a stateroom, and that includes the $290 port charges. After October 31, 2026, new bookings receive the group discount only.

A deposit of $400 per person reserves your stateroom (half of the deposit is nonrefundable), and final payment isn't due until July 23, 2028.

October 2028 sounds far away. But staterooms are subject to availability when you book, and a ship with 51 staterooms doesn't have many of any one type.

Who Is This Trip For?

It is for wine lovers, food lovers and history lovers. It is for couples, friends traveling together, and solo travelers who want the comfort of a group without giving up their independence. And it is for anyone who has done the big European cities and is ready for something quieter.
