Renewing My Fiji Matai Bronze Specialist Certification
Cindi Sanden
Fiji has always held a special place in my heart. I first became a certified Fiji Matai Specialist back in 2017, around the time of my first trip to the islands. It was during my second trip, at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, where I had one of the most defining moments of my travel life - conquering my fear of scuba diving and discovering a world of vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish beneath the surface. Fiji captured something in me that has never let go, and keeping my Matai certification current has been a priority ever since.
I am proud to share that I have officially renewed my Fiji Matai Bronze Specialist status through Tourism Fiji, and the timing could not be better. Fiji is one of our most requested destinations right now, and having this certification gives my clients confidence that they are working with an advisor who truly knows these islands inside and out.
What Is the Fiji Matai Specialist Program?
"Matai" is a Fijian word meaning "to be knowledgeable" or "to be an expert." The Fiji Matai Specialist Programme is Tourism Fiji's official global training program designed for travel advisors who want deep, authentic knowledge about selling Fiji as a destination.
The program covers everything from Fiji's best-known regions and hidden gems to resort experiences, cultural traditions, adventure activities, romance and wedding planning, and practical selling strategies. It is not a surface-level overview. The coursework goes deep into what makes each region unique, which resorts fit which types of travelers, and how to craft itineraries that truly capture the spirit of the islands.
There are three tiers of certification - Bronze, Silver, and Gold - each requiring progressively more training, knowledge checks, and active engagement with the destination. Earning Bronze means completing all six core courses covering Introduction to Fiji, Best Known Regions, Relaxed Experiences, Active Experiences, Off the Beaten Track Regions, and Selling Fiji, along with passing each course's quiz.
Why I Keep This Certification Current
Having held this certification since 2017, I have watched the Fiji travel landscape evolve significantly. New resorts have opened, experiences have expanded, and the way travelers want to explore these islands has changed. Each time I renew, I am refreshing my knowledge with the latest information from Tourism Fiji directly, and that matters for the quality of trips I plan.
The results speak for themselves. Fiji is consistently one of our top-requested destinations at Awaken Travels, and I believe a big part of that is the confidence clients feel knowing their advisor has specialized, certified expertise in the destination. When someone comes to me dreaming of Fiji, I am not starting from scratch. I am drawing on years of personal experience, ongoing training, and a genuine love for these islands.
Why This Matters for Your Fiji Trip
When you work with a Fiji Matai Specialist, you are working with someone who has been trained directly by Tourism Fiji on the nuances of this destination. That matters more than you might think.
Fiji is made up of over 330 islands, and the differences between regions are significant. The Mamanuca Islands offer easy access from the mainland and are perfect for families or couples looking for a classic beach resort experience. The Yasawa Islands are more remote and rugged, ideal for travelers who want fewer crowds and more authentic cultural encounters. The Coral Coast along Viti Levu's southern shore has incredible reef access and is home to some of Fiji's most storied resorts. And places like Taveuni - the "Garden Island" - and Savusavu offer lush rainforest, world-class diving, and a pace of life that feels wonderfully removed from the everyday.
Knowing which island, which resort, and which combination of experiences will match your travel style is something that comes from dedicated study and personal experience. And that is exactly what this certification represents.
What I Learned (Again) Along the Way
Even after years of planning Fiji trips and traveling there personally, the renewed Matai training reminded me of things I love and taught me things I did not know. Here are a few highlights that stuck with me.
The Coral Coast is Fiji's adventure capital. Pacific Harbour and the Beqa Lagoon area are known as the adventure capital of Fiji, with incredible shark diving, river safaris on the Sigatoka River, and zip-lining through rainforest canopies. If you have an adventurous traveler who wants more than a beach chair, this is where I send them.
Fiji's cruise options are more varied than most people realize. Beyond the large cruise ships that stop in Fiji ports, there are intimate small-ship experiences like the M.V. Fiji Princess, a Captain Cook cruise vessel that takes you through the Yasawa Islands on multi-day voyages with stops at remote villages and pristine beaches.
Romance in Fiji goes beyond the honeymoon. From legal wedding ceremonies that can be arranged at resorts to vow renewals on private islands, Fiji's romance offerings are thoughtfully designed. And the process for making a Fiji wedding legally recognized is straightforward, which is something many couples worry about when considering a destination wedding abroad.
The off-the-beaten-track regions are where the real magic happens. Kadavu Island, the Lomaiviti Group, and Vanua Levu offer experiences that most visitors to Fiji never see. These areas are for the traveler who wants to go deeper, who values authenticity over convenience, and who wants stories to tell that their friends have never heard.
What This Means for You
If you have been thinking about a trip to Fiji, or if Fiji has been quietly sitting on your bucket list, this is your sign. With nearly a decade of Matai certification and multiple personal trips to the islands, I bring a depth of expertise that is hard to match.
Whether you are dreaming of a romantic overwater bure, a family adventure on the Coral Coast, a wellness retreat on a private island, or a multi-island itinerary that blends beach time with cultural immersion, I can design it with confidence and insider knowledge.
Fiji is not just a destination I recommend. It is a destination I love, one I have experienced personally, and one I have studied extensively through the Matai program for years. That combination of passion and preparation is what I bring to every Fiji trip I plan.
