Colombia by River: Be Among the First to Sail the Magdalena with AmaWaterways

Some trips take you to a destination. Others take you into one. Our Colombia river cruise in January 2027 is the second kind.

I am hosting a group aboard the brand-new AmaMagdalena, and I have to tell you - this is the trip I am most excited about in our entire 2026-2027 lineup. Not because it is the most luxurious (though it is beautiful). Not because it is the most exotic (though it is). But because it is genuinely pioneering. AmaWaterways is the first major river cruise line to sail the Magdalena River, and we will be among the very first guests to experience it.

That kind of opportunity does not come along often.

Why Colombia, and Why Now

Colombia has been on my radar for years. My interest started with the country's complex, fascinating history. But it grew from years of traveling Central and South America - Guatemala, Belize, Panama, Costa Rica, and dozens of Caribbean islands. Every trip south taught me something new, and every traveler I talked to who had been to Colombia came back changed.

The Colombia of today is a country that has worked incredibly hard to transform itself. The result is a destination that offers something I rarely find anymore - genuine surprise. The colors, the music, the warmth of the people, the food, the biodiversity. It is not polished and packaged for tourists. It is alive.

And the Magdalena River is the heartbeat of it all. Colombians call it the River of Life, and once you understand its role in the country's history, culture, and ecology, you will see why.

The Ship: AmaMagdalena

AmaWaterways has built its reputation on doing river cruising better than anyone. I have written about my love for AmaWaterways before, and this ship takes everything I admire about the brand and applies it to an entirely new waterway.

AmaMagdalena is purpose-built for the Magdalena River. She carries just 60 guests - even more intimate than most AmaWaterways ships. Every stateroom has a balcony. The dining features locally inspired cuisine that changes with the region you are sailing through. And the crew-to-guest ratio means the service is personal in a way that larger ships simply cannot match.

The sundeck pool, the lounge, the fitness room, the spa - it is all there. But on a ship this size, everything feels like it belongs to you.

The Itinerary: January 23-30, 2027

Our 7-night voyage starts and ends in Cartagena, with the river portion taking us deep into Colombia's interior. Here is what you can expect:

Cartagena - We begin in one of the most beautiful colonial cities in the Western Hemisphere. The walled Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking its cobblestone streets at sunset feels like stepping into a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel. The colors of the buildings, the flowers spilling from balconies, the music drifting from open doorways - Cartagena sets the tone for everything that follows.

The Magdalena River - Once we leave Cartagena and enter the river, the landscape transforms. Lush jungle, exotic birds, river communities that have lived along these banks for centuries. This is not a manicured landscape. It is wild, verdant, and full of life.

Santa Cruz de Mompox - This colonial gem is one of the highlights of the trip. A UNESCO World Heritage Site often described as a town frozen in time, Mompox sits on an island in the Magdalena and feels like it has barely changed in 400 years. The architecture, the filigree jewelry tradition, the quiet pace of life - it is the kind of place that makes you want to stay an extra week. We will attend a private jazz concert here, which is the kind of exclusive experience AmaWaterways is known for.

Palenque - This village holds an extraordinary distinction. Founded by escaped enslaved Africans in the 17th century, San Basilio de Palenque was the first free town in the Americas. Its people have preserved their language, music, and culture for over 300 years. Visiting here is powerful and moving.

The Wildlife - Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth. Along the Magdalena, you will see howler monkeys, river dolphins, caimans, and an incredible variety of tropical birds. Our onboard naturalist will help you spot and identify the wildlife as we cruise.

The Music - Colombia calls itself the Land of a Thousand Rhythms, and that is not an exaggeration. You will hear Vallenato, Cumbia, and other musical traditions that are deeply woven into daily life. Our itinerary includes exclusive musical performances - a private jazz concert in Mompox, an onboard Cumbia celebration, and spontaneous encounters with local musicians in the river communities we visit.

Why River Cruising in Colombia Is Special

Ocean cruising gives you ports of call - a few hours in each place, then back on the ship. River cruising is different. The scenery is your constant companion. You are never more than a few hundred feet from shore, and the landscape changes slowly, giving you time to absorb it.

On the Magdalena, this is particularly powerful because you are traveling through parts of Colombia that are simply not accessible any other way. These are not tourist destinations. They are living, breathing communities that happen to sit along one of the great rivers of the Americas.

AmaWaterways understands this, which is why their excursions focus on cultural immersion rather than sightseeing. You do not just visit Mompox - you walk its streets with a local guide, learn about its filigree artisans, and sit in a courtyard listening to live music. You do not just pass through Palenque - you meet its residents, hear their stories, and taste the food that has been prepared this way for centuries.

What It Means to Have Us as Your Hosts

Nate and I will be on this ship with you. That is not a small thing.

We have traveled South and Central America extensively. We know the rhythms of travel in this part of the world - the relaxed pace, the emphasis on connection over efficiency, the importance of being open to surprise. We will be there to share our experience, to make introductions, and to make sure every detail is handled.

Our group will have exclusive experiences and gatherings that individual travelers would not have access to. And because the ship carries only 60 guests, our group will make up a meaningful portion of everyone on board. The atmosphere will be warm, social, and genuinely fun.

Is This Trip Right for You?

If you are the kind of traveler who has done Europe and the Caribbean and is looking for something different - something that challenges your perspective and feeds your curiosity - Colombia is calling.

If you love music, food, history, and wildlife, and you want to experience all four in a single week - this is it.

If you have been curious about river cruising but want something more adventurous than the Rhine or the Danube - the Magdalena is the answer.

And if you want to be among the very first to experience a brand-new itinerary on a brand-new ship, with hosts who are genuinely passionate about this destination - well, that is what we are offering.
